Description What is a tree? According to Zen Buddhism it is everything but itself--in other words, it is made up of all non-tree elements. Many things go into making a tree: air, water, minerals and...the Sun, to name a few. This image is a poetical interpretation of this idea. It's a cross-section of a tree trunk that has been reinterpreted to give the look and feel of the inner core of the Sun, burning hot and glowing. The rings and texture of the tree are there as well, so it is both: Sun and Tree.
Matthew Marth, Vienna Member Since November 2007 Artist Statement I am an American artist and composer living in Vienna, Austria. Much of my work is oriented towards building visual and sonic environments that are generated from random patterns and chaos. I look to nature for models of complex organic systems and I like to think of my works as portals or focused glimpses into infinite reality.
