Artist Statement John M. Butler II an employee of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in the Photography Dept. as a Content Editor, Photo Editor and Video Editor. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1950 but has honed and developed his craft in Pittsburgh.

He uses J. Monroe Butler II as his credited line in honor of his father.

In 1994, GOD picked John up out of the madness of drugs and alcohol and blessed him to go to the Pittsburgh Art Institute. He graduated in 1997 as a Graphic Designer. That same year he began working at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, pasting up articles for journalism contests. A year later he moved to the Composing Room as a production tech where he used his graphic design skills to build ads.

Then GOD preparing him for his next level, had him moved to the scan room where he learned how to image photos.

In 2000, John was blessed to be moved to the PG Photo Department as a photo imager. There they put a camera in his hands and told him to use it. He told them that he didn’t know a thing about photography, but GOD had other plans for him. He blessed John to be around a department of very talented people who taught him the ins and outs of photography.

He is now a Content Editor, Photo Editor and Video Editor.

“All praise to GOD my father and to Jesus Christ my Lord and savior to use me as their instrument to take pictures to show others the beauty that they may not see,” John said.
