Description According to both Hinduism and Buddhism our soul goes through a natural process of birth, death and rebirth as we continue from one life to the next. Death destroys the physical body but not the soul. The soul is eternal. Hindus believe the soul, or atman is intrinsically pure. However due to the layers of I-ness and my-ness the soul goes through transmigration in the cycles of birth and death. This means that the type of form that we take from one life to the next depends on our karma. We may be reborn as an animal, human, plant or even a divinity depending on our past behaviour and spiritual needs. As long as the soul is enveloped in ignorance of its true nature it is subject to the wheel of birth and death. Every action produces a result. This result must be experienced in this life or the next.I dont hold any firm beliefs on what happens when we die. However transmigration makes a lot of sense to me and it is interesting to consider. Also it seems like a very kind way for the universe to deal with really crooked and dangerous individuals to make them a worm or something in there next life. However some might consider being reincarnated as a bug a real honour. A reward for reaching a certain level of enlightenment.
