Artist Statement A self taught photographer, I started taking photos casually 25 years ago and become more serious once I retired in 2005. When I traveled on business I took photos wherever I went. London, Amsterdam, Sydney New York, Boston. I still have a camera handy and take photos whenever I see something that moves me. The result is eclectic – most often nature (I am a conservationist having served as a Conservation Commissioner and on the board of a Conservation Trust) and street photography.
Artistic Vision
I attempt to capture my own perception of what I see, be it beauty, humor, geometry, story, people, action or decay. I take photos wherever I go.
Influences
Robert Rauschenberg: he took in the world and turned out art. He said, “I really feel sorry for people who think things like soap dishes or mirrors or Coke bottles are ugly. Because they’re surrounded by things like that all day long, and it must make them miserable.” I agree. Henri Cartier-Bresson said, “Sharpness is a bourgeois concept.” I agree with this as well. Joel Meyerowitz for the shear beauty of his eclectic body work.
Equipment
In 2004 I sold my Leicas and other film equipment and bought digital cameras, a good printer and an Apple computer. I make 95% of my prints myself using an Epson 2200 wide format printer and high quality archival inks and paper. I enjoy using simple well made highly portable cameras. Currently I’m using a Panasonic LX5 along with a Panasonic G1 micro four thirds camera with interchangeable lenses.
Successes and Recognition
In 2009 I founded a cooperative art gallery, Art On Main, in Westford with some partners and sold many framed and matted pieces of my work. In addition, my images have been published as cover art and illustrations for cultural and business publications
