Description Since that first ship set sail carrying away those who were leaving their hearts in the islands, a tradition was born. To this day travelers leaving the islands throw their leis into the water and watch expectantly as the waves carry their leis, hopefully, back to the beloved shore. As legend has it, if the lei returns to the shore, some day, so will the departing traveler. In this painting, two leis have returned to a beautiful beach, reassuring the lovers who threw them into the dancing waters, that they too will return.
