Description Whitby Abbey wqas destroyed by order of King Henry VIII because the pope would not let him marry one of his wives. So he declared himself head of the church of England and set about destroying as many of the Catholic Abbeys and Monasteries that he could. The pond in front of the Abbey is where the monks kept fish for eating, mainly carp, as fish we don't seem to eat today. There is a historical centre attached to the monastry grounds that is well worth a visit.
