Description Living in the most bitter cold ecosystems on planet Earth one may find the arctic wolf. You are unlikely to ever cross the path of the arctic wolf, unless you a researcher or photographer braving the dreadful elements in the extreme north. People from tribes long accustomed to such conditions may see them from time to time, but the arctic wolves only live in the most northern parts of the north. The Arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos) is also known as the white wolf or polar wolf; native to Canada's Queen Elizabeth Islands, from Melville Island to Ellesmere Island. Little is known about Arctic wolves, mainly due to climate. The wolf migrates only during the wintertime when there is complete darkness for 24 hours. This greatly impedes research. About 2,250 km (1,400 mi) south of the High Arctic, a wolf movement study took place in the wintertime in complete darkness, when the temperature was as low as 53 C (63 F). The researchers found that white wolves prey mainly on muskoxen and hares. Arctic wolves inhabit the harshest Arctic regions of North America and Greenland. Thanks to its isolation, the Arctic wolf is not threatened by hunting and habitat destruction in the same way as its southern relatives. I.M. Spadecaller, Clearwater Member Since March 2010 Artist Statement Welcome to Spadecaller's Galleries.
About the Artist: Spadecaller (Matt Schwartz) is the pseudonym he uses for his visual art, writing, poetry, and video creations; initially, the name came about by his direct approach on subjects that focus on humanitarian issues that impact our world today. He's known to call a spade a spade.
In the late 1950’s, Spadecaller’s formal training in traditional oil painting techniques commenced. He was eight years old, when he started private painting lessons. Through considerable personal sacrifice, his mother, who has since passed away, nurtured his artistic talents and provided him with many of the tools and circumstances to launch his creative journey. Memories of art exhibitions in New York City that his mother introduced him to continue to motivate his quest for excellence. Spadecaller attended The School of Visual Arts in New York City (1970-71), and during the 70's up until the late 80's, he exhibited acrylic and oils in Montreal and New York. As a realist painter, he strives to capture the beauty of nature and the soul of humankind. Due to the onset of chronic illness in the late nineties and with the advent of image editing software, he turned to creating digital hand painted images, mixed media and photographic art - fusing these into an art form worthy of the same gratification that he had once found in oils.
