Description These fabulous flowers have attracted gardeners and artists for hundreds of years. They bloom in autumn, winter, and spring. From the tea family, Theaceae, the Camellia is a small flowering evergreen tree or shrub. The camellia typically grows 6-12' tall. They are native to Eastern and Southern Asia, most particularly China, Japan, Korea, India, and Indonesia. In the Japanese emperors garden, there are Camellia trees over 500 years old. The oldest living camellia, planted in 1347, can be found in China's Panlong Monastery. Chinas native name for camellias means tea flower. Camellia sinensis, known as the tea plant, is the most common plant in the world to be used to make tea. Green tea, black tea, white tea, oolong tea and other types of tea are made from the young Camellia leaves. The flowers portrayed in this hand-painted digital image is a cultivar of the camellia sasanqua, known as Dream Angel. This picture was created in Spadecallers Florida Studio on 5/9/2021.
