I have visited the Abbey of Gethsemani, outside of Bardstown, Kentucky, for over 30 years now. Gethsemani was, for many years, the monastic home of Thomas Merton (known there as Brother Louis, or Louie) a monk recognized worldwide as a profoundly influential writer, ecumenicist, social activist, naturalist, artist, and poet of the mid-twentieth century. Merton was my mentor in all these respects, and therefore the monastery holds a special place in my heart. Today, the monastery remains a place of refuge, a sanctuary in the midst of a disordered world, grounded in the rural environment it shares with its farming neighbors. "Nature's Hermitage" is a gallery of art images, sometimes with grainy or saturated effects, all icons of my meditations during my last sojourn to the monastery. It was summer 2005. I had the privilege of making a solitary retreat at a hermitage, quite by itself, which had been built by hand by another celebrated monk-artist. Out of that sojourn came these images, blessed by holy silence, time measured by light and shadow, rambles through woodlands, up hills, across meadows and fields. There is the image of the full moon night's magic, a hooded monk washing dishes, sculptures discovered at the bend in the path. . . . Well, I won't say more. Please enter, and walk these paths.
