Current Gallery: ikebana ( piece)
My paintings begin in a state of anarchy: scraps of canvas stitched and sewn. Raw, reckless and messy, layer upon layer of colors appear through drips, splatters, big brushes, hands and fingers. As the background transforms, I leave it loose to contrast the chunky realism in the foreground. I then focus on figure and form. This ritual evolution creates rich, deep texture beneath heightened reality. The ikebana-inspired series began as an exploration into the beauty of decay. This deconstructive pursuit gave way to contortions of figurative bone-like florals.   While the paintings have evolved into a study of beauty and abundance, I strive to maintain the dark edginess implicit in the process of de-composition. Ikebana (生け花?, "living flowers") is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, also known as kadō (華道?, the "way of flowers"). Through its use of minimalism, Ikebana uses specific plants, elements and angles to symbolize different elements of nature and spirituality. There are different schools, eras and styles of Ikebana, it is considered a true art form in Japan. I was first drawn to it because of it's serene, simple beauty. i loved it's asymmetry and thoughtfulness. All works by Opie Snow Heyerman can be printed and custom framed on-demand.
