Description Original painting depicting Tiger tank 1331, commanded by SS Untersturmfuhrer Michael Wittmann, 3rd Platoon, 13th Heavy Company, 1st SS Panzer Regiment assaulting entrenched Soviet antitank guns and dug in T34 tanks on Hill 220.5 on the opening day of Operation Citadel, 5th July, 1943. Over the course of a day of intensive fighting, often at close range, Wittmann and his crew destroyed eight Soviet tanks and seven antitank guns.

The artist has a long-standing historical interest in the German armed forces that fought on land during the Second World War. Thus, the artist specialises in depicting individual soldiers or the battles that they fought in. The works are original and inspired by the wealth of photographs from the conflict and attempt to portray the experience of conflict as captured on the faces of the participants.
