Description Back in September of 2005, I was tasked to help with a unit's training rotation and forced to spend a month out 'in the field' (meaning I'd be cold, sleep-deprived, and miserable in general) because a the guy who had originally been pegged to do so went home to Biloxi on what is known in the Army as emergency leave. (It's pretty much self-explanatory if you think about it.) It must be remembered that, at the time, Hurricane Katrina was devastating large parts of the Gulf Coast. Biloxi was among the towns that was hit the hardest.
A few months later, during Christmas leave, I drove from Baltimore to New Orleans with a good friend of mine in order to help him move back into his apartment after four months, and to enjoy the sights and sounds of New Orleans on New Year's Eve. As we neared New Orleans, after a day of driving, we decided to take a detour through Biloxi. I enjoy writing, and once attempted to read a dictionary straight through, yet was unable to come up with the words to describe what just how bad things were in Biloxi, a full four months after Katrina.
Despite the devasation around me, there was life about. People were milling around, and some had started to pick clean up parts of the city and waterfront. The pelican you see was busy as well. After helping herself to a meal, she stopped her search for food just long enough for me to take this photo before heading off to do some more fishing.
Thanks for taking the time to view this picture. If you've decided to purchase a print or framed version of it, thanks again. Regardless, have a great day.
