_____________________________________________ No, it's not Rosebud, but I suppose it could be a close relative. A child's painted antique wooden sled hangs, roped to barn board, high up on a wall in the East Haddam (Connecticut) Historical Society Museum. _____________________________________________ The title is from Ballade des dames du temps jadis (Ballad of the Ladies of Times Past) by Franois Villon, a 15th-century poet, teacher, and (later pardoned) murderer. Part of a larger work called 'Grand Testament', Villon called it simply Ballade; a publisher added the rest of the title in 1533. _____________________________________________ Dante Gabriel Rossetti translated the poem into English as 'Ballad of Dead Ladies', and the quotation from that poem that serves as the title to this piece as 'But where are the snows of yesteryear?', although in the original medieval French d'antan means 'last year'. Mais o sont les neiges d'antan? is one of the most popularly-translated quotations in the history of literature._____________________________________________ Digital oil painting with on a cracked-wood panel from an original photograph shot June 12, 2010.
