'I remember so well how the noon light shone in the study as I would descend the stairs from the second floor landing. The light from the curtained window was so delicate yet bright it made the entire room glow with warmth; even Mamas secretary in the corner was illuminated.'
'By modern standards the study was cluttered and overcrowded, but in the day its dcor was considered fashionable. Auntie had donated several of her treasures to embellish the room; most of them had nothing in common in either style or color. There was a huge Oriental rug whose background color almost matched the polished wood floor and the pitcher and washbowl from England occupied pride of place in front of the window. Teddy and I often sat on the floor and played there, and it was not unusual to see forgotten games, books or shoes under or on the furniture.'
'Papa was never pleased to find our leavings; he was something of a stickler for neatness and order. If he noticed anything amiss upon entering the study he would stand at the bottom of the stairs and whistle sharply and we knew that one or both of us had better scurry on down and remove whatever it was that caught Papas eye. Mama and Auntie Rose were much gentler about our careless habits. If they found anything wed neglected to take back to our rooms they would usually bring it to us and remind us that everything had its place, and the place for our belongings was not the study.' ~ from the diary of Ellen Fall (1889-1965)
