Description 2009 RC deWinter ~ All Rights Reserved ~~ This faithful reproduction of the freedom schooner Amistad, on which Africans being transported to slave markets rose up in rebellion and were later exonerated by the US Supreme Court, was constructed at the DuPont Preservation shipyard at Mystic Seaport by members of 'Amistad America'.
'Amistad America' is a non-profit group with headquarters in New Haven, Connecticut, and the ship they built to commemorate the seminal beginnings of freedom from slavery is the state's official flagship and tall ship ambassador. The new Amistad was launched in 2000 from Mystic and has since traveled far and wide, teaching the history of the Amistad revolt and taking part in gatherings of tall ships. It has also sailed to the original home of the Amistadcaptives, Sierra Leone. You can read more about the Amistad, its history and the politics involved, here: Amistad America.
Soft-focus, film-grained photograph shot at Mystic Seaport on Columbus Day, October 12th, 2009.
