Description Painting of Tiger tank 1331 of SS-Untersturmfhrer Michael Wittmann on the 12th July 1943 during Operation Citadel.Contrary to popular myth, the engagement that occurred near the town of Prokhorovka between the tanks of the Soviet 5th Guards Tank Army and the 2nd SS Panzer Corps was a disaster for the Russian formation. Although the attack prevented a German breakthrough, the suicidal charge at the arrayed German formations resulted in the damage or destruction of approximately 600 tanks. In comparison German tank losses for July 12th have been estimated at 48. On this day Michael Wittmann and his crew destroyed eight Soviet tanks, three anti-tank guns and one gun battery and contributed to the annihilation of the Soviet 181st Tank Regiment.Michael Wittmann was killed in action in Normandy on the 8th August 1944. The artist has a long-standing historical interest in the German armed forces that fought on land during the Second World War. Thus, the artist specialises in depicting individual soldiers or the battles that they fought in. The works are original and inspired by the wealth of photographs from the conflict and attempt to portray the experience of conflict as captured on the faces of the participants.
