Description Colorized photo from 1924, May 16Original Title: Train of 1862 & 1924 Limited - Great NorthernPhotographer: Bain NewsLocation: 229-337 N Clinton St (about and on tracks), Chicago, ILThis is an exposition of two locomotives ran by Great Northern. It was an anniversary celebration for the 60 years the Great Northern Railway existed. They started the tour in Chicago on May 1924, and it stopped in the cities served by the railroad (Minneapolis/St. Paul, Fargo, Grand Forks, Portland, Spokane and Seattle). Each stop, they allowed people to tour everything. The locomotive in the rear is the William Crooks, built in 1861, it was the first locomotive in Minnesota. It was owned by the St. Paul & Pacific, but it was failing miserably until a syndicare led by James J Hill bought it and revitalized it. Eventually this became known as the Great NorthernThey used this train till the late 1890's, the owner saved it from being scrapped, and used it for special runs. Some time later, it donated it to the Minnesota Historical Society, for their museum, and its still there today. Now the one in the front is the Oriental Limited, (the name was a take of the Oriental express). It was a passenger train, running between Chicago to Seattle. And by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railroad between St. Paul and Chicago. The locomotive started in 1905 as a St Paul train, it was extended to Chicago in 1909. In the summer of 1926 it was scheduled to travel from Chicago to Seattle in 70 hours. By 1931 they dropped the name and during the depression they used it to travel from Chicago to the coast. And eventually after that the train series was called the Empire Builder (after the name of the owner of the company).
