Description Cernunnos is the Celtic god of the forest, the antlered god, and the basis for the Green Man. The deer was a sacred animal to the ancient Celts. It provided them with food and clothing, for one thing. The growth of the antlers also mirrored the cycle of power of the year. I'd been wanting to paint Cernunnos in the form of a stag, and I was inspired by a hike on a nearby foggy mountaintop. I wanted to put Cernunnos in that scene. I call this painting Cernunnos I because it is the first in a series. I love deer. They are very much the Kings of the Forest.
