Description I cannot keep away from the fascinating bird, the Pelican! Here is an abstract, shot wide open at the 400mm end of the canon 100-400mm f/4.8-5.6 L to give the thin depth of field focussing on the the mysterious appendage common to all Pelicans, the Mandibular nail. Thought to be used primarily as a hook and a securing mechanism for feeding, it may also play a role in courtship. This is the Australian Pelican, Pelecanus conspicillatus, one of the most brightly coloured of the pelicans, particularly around breeding time and just about my favourite of all birds :0)
