After the Elector's was crowned first king of Prussia in 1701, the palace was expanded by the architect Eosander von Gthe into a more representative seat based on the Versailles model. Charlottenburg Palace is among the largest palaces in the world. The most characteristic building element of the palace - its oversized dome. The copper dome roof of Charlottenburg Palace is a striking feature that crowns the central tower of the palace's Old Palace section. The dome, covered in weathered copper, adds a distinct and regal element to the palace's silhouette.
