Due to the absence of a written language within the Inca civilization, there are no written records of the site while it was in use. Most recent archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as a residence for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438-1472). Its construction took place around 1450, but it was abandoned approximately a century later, during the time of the Spanish conquest.In 1913, the world was captivated by the April issue of National Geographic, titled 'In the Wonderland of Peru,' which focused on the enigmatic 'Lost City of the Incas,' Machu Picchu. Two years earlier, history professor Hiram Bingham had found the Inca city never before known of by the outside world.The alpaca and llama are closely related, both species of South American camelids, have been domesticated by the Andean people for over ten thousand years. During the era of the Inca Empire, llamas were the largest domesticated animals in South America, as horses, mules, donkeys, and other mammals we are familiar with today were absent. As a result, llamas played a crucial role in transporting food, guano, and construction materials, facilitating the expansion of the Inca Empire.
