Description Watercolor, 11 x 15Charlottenburg Palace built by King Friedrich I in 1699 as a summer palace for his wife Sophie Charlotte, it is the largest palace in Berlin. The palace combines rococo and baroque decor and architecture, and is surrounded by landscaped gardens in the manner of Versailles. In 1943, during a British air raid, the palace was hit by a bomb which caused a fire that completely destroyed the building. After the war there were plans to demolish the palace, but after the East German government demolished the main palace of the Hohenzollern in 1950, West German authorities decided to restore Charlottenburg Palace; it took more than sixty years to complete.
