Description The Doges Palace, has a Gothic style and is located in the center of the city of Venice next to the Basilica of San Marco. It was not only the center of government during the Venetian Republic but also the residence of the Doge. The Doge's first palace was a wretched, gloomy wooden fortress with massive defensive towers, and after several fires, the castle was incorporated characteristics of Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance, and Byzantine-style architecture. The palace has the architectural detail of the Venetian Gothic lancet arch window and Moorish pattern brickwork. At the beginning of the 17th century, the architect Antonio Contin added the New Prisons, beyond the canal connecting them to the Palace with the Bridge of Sighs. The view from the Bridge of Sighs was the last view of Venice that convicts saw before their imprisonment. The Palace has opened as a museum since 1923.
